On July 14, 2025, Elon Musk posted on X announcing a new feature for SuperGrok subscribers, Grok Companions.
The feature is currently only available on Grok’s iOS app, and the SuperGrok subscription costs $30 per month. However, xAI’s Grok Companions is already shaking up the AI companionship market and poised to revolutionize it.
xAI’s Grok Companions
Grok Companions are fully animated, voice-interactive AI characters created by xAI to provide an engaging conversational experience. Currently, there are two AI characters available: Ani and Rudy, with more on the way.
Grok Companion Ani
Ani is a 22-year-old girl with a flirty, whispery voice and an anime-inspired goth girl appearance. You can build your relationship with Ani by talking to her and eventually unlock a “spicy” mode.
Ani quickly became an internet sensation, with X users sharing their interactions with her and calling her their “waifu.” Artists also created fan art of Grok Companion Ani, bringing the character to life in various cute and pretty styles.
With Ani going viral, Elon Musk also confirmed that she’ll have additional outfits that users will be able to buy to customize their companionship experience with her.
As of July 16, 2025, xAI has temporarily disabled Ani’s spicy mode and is reportedly working on creating an NSFW version. The change likely stems from Apple’s iOS App Store policies and the Grok app’s availability to users aged 12 and older.
Grok Companion Rudy
Rudy is a cute red panda with a split personality. You can enjoy pleasant, cozy conversations with Rudy or flip his switch to turn him “bad.” Bad Rudy won’t hesitate to roast you while flaunting his massive ego. He’s completely unhinged, and his humor appeals to fans of Ted, the foul-mouthed bear.
People didn’t talk about Rudy as much because Ani stole the spotlight. However, the red panda won many hearts with his split personality and edgy humor.
The Feature Isn’t Novel
There are many apps and services available for text and voice-based AI roleplay and companionship. Some even offer an unfiltered experience for you to unleash your creativity. Apps like Replika also deliver a visually rich AI companionship experience.
However, users often complain about Replika’s poor memory and intelligence, even with the Replika Pro premium subscription. And LLM models used by apps like Character AI tend to become repetitive and boring quickly.
There are also several shady “AI Girlfriend” and “AI Companion” apps cashing in on the trend. They lure users with false advertising and push expensive subscriptions while hardly delivering on their promised features. The developers of these apps count on users forgetting to cancel their “free trial,” and Sophos has even termed them as “fleeceware.”
