Earlier today, Shep announced that JanitorAI’s native iOS and Android apps are now in beta. Users can sign up and join a waitlist for early access to be among the first to try JanitorAI’s new mobile app.
The developers chose to create native apps to provide a better experience and more features to mobile users. JanitorAI’s native iOS and Android apps were also in beta in 2024. However, at that time, the developers decided to prioritize developing JanitorAI’s website.
Why JanitorAI Decided To Develop A Mobile App
JanitorAI is the most popular ‘unfiltered’ AI roleplay platform, with over 2 million daily users. The platform processes over 1 trillion tokens daily, the majority through its free in-house JanitorLLM (JLLM).
According to Shep, 80% of JanitorAI’s users are on mobile, and the experience on “mobile web has just kinda sucked to be honest.” JanitorAI’s native iOS and Android apps will improve user experience and allow the developers to “do stuff [they] literally couldn’t do on web.”
The bigger picture is to have real-time recommendation feeds, real-time comments, group chats, and other cool experimental features that will work natively.

Shep and his team have also been working on improving creators’ experience on their platform. They are developing features like creator analytics, tools to help creators grow their audience, and “stuff that makes this feel more like publishing interactive stories than just uploading character cards.”

Focusing all resources on JanitorAI’s website might have been fine so far, but the developers decided that a native app is better for the long term, from both a development and user experience perspective.
NSFW Content On JanitorAI’s Native iOS and Android Apps
Apple and Google are both strict when it comes to enforcing their Terms of Service. JanitorAI users were concerned that the unfiltered platform would implement stricter moderation to comply with app store guidelines.
Shep confirmed that there will be no changes to site moderation, and everything “stays exactly the same.” App stores require NSFW content to be off by default, and a user will have to toggle NSFW content on once on the website to access adult content in the app.
However, Apple removed Chub’s iOS app even though it was labeled as adult-only (18+) and didn’t display any NSFW content. Apple wanted Chub to censor content generated by its LLMs, but the developers refused, which led to the app’s removal from the iOS App Store.
Users Concerned About The Development
Many users have long asked JanitorAI’s developers to create native mobile apps, and those who prefer ease of use look for AI roleplay platforms with mobile apps. But not everyone is happy with the announcement.
Character AI shifted its focus from its website to its app, with several new features now available only through the app. JanitorAI’s development team is small, and they are already struggling to improve and maintain their website. Users fear that all resources will eventually be diverted to the app, and the developers will snub the website.
They are also concerned that the platform will impose more censorship and restrictions to comply with Apple and Google’s guidelines. Although other AI roleplay and companion apps that allow NSFW content exist, none are as famous as JanitorAI.
JanitorAI’s official statement is that nothing will change. Site moderation will remain the same, and “everything [users] have available right now [on the website] will still be available once the app is up.”
JanitorAI’s Native iOS And Android Apps Now In Beta
JanitorAI’s developers, who previously decided to dedicate resources to improving the platform’s website rather than creating mobile apps, have now announced that JanitorAI’s native iOS and Android apps are in beta.
Having native apps will allow JanitorAI’s developers to improve the mobile user experience and develop features they couldn’t provide through the mobile web interface.
Not all users are happy with the announcement, as many worry that the platform will implement further censorship and restrictions to comply with Apple and Google’s guidelines. They are also concerned that developers will eventually snub the website and focus solely on the app.
JanitorAI’s native apps will have NSFW turned off, and users will need to toggle it on via the website to access it on the app. The platform’s official statement reassures users that there will be no changes to site moderation and that all current website features will remain available once the app is released.
