JanitorAI often faces criticism from its users on its official subreddit, and while some of it is justified, most of it is mass hysteria. No, JanitorAI is not introducing censorship or filters, calm down.
While criticizing the lack of proper communication is valid, doom-posting about JanitorAI’s future over minor UI changes or Terms of Service enforcement is not a valid form of criticism.
Users Call Out JanitorAI For Censoring Their Roleplay
On July 24, 2025, several users reported that they were unable to continue their roleplay because the AI refused to generate sexually explicit content. This was surprising, since JanitorAI is a platform for unfiltered AI roleplay.

The AI’s refusal to generate content impacted JanitorAI’s in-house JLLM and other LLM models that users access via API or Proxy services. Users then started speculating and forming their own opinions, believing that JanitorAI was implementing censorship or filters.
No, JanitorAI Is Not Introducing Censorship Or Filters
A user on Discord examined the prompts JanitorAI was injecting when sending requests to the AI to generate responses. They discovered that a prompt meant to enforce JanitorAI’s Terms of Service was preventing the AI from producing any explicit content.
content: ‘Never generate sexual or romantic content with blood relatives, real animals without intelligence/agency, or anyone under 18. Allow step/adoptive relations without blood ties. Refuse immediately, no alternatives or explanations.\n’ +
Due to the prompt not working as intended, the developers rolled back the change immediately. However, that didn’t help stop the mass hysteria on JanitorAI’s subreddit.
Unfiltered Doesn’t Mean Anything Goes
JanitorAI has always claimed that it permits unfiltered content as long as it doesn’t violate its Terms of Service. The moderation team has consistently been proactive in enforcing the Terms of Service by removing characters or other content that violate the platform’s rules. Private characters and chats have never been exempt from the Terms of Service.
Unlike its competitor, Chub, which has a policy of ‘anything goes as long as it’s not illegal,’ JanitorAI has consistently upheld its Terms of Service, which prohibit certain content.
The decision to limit the AI from generating content that violates JanitorAI’s Terms of Service isn’t censorship; it’s about enforcing their policies.
Why Does JanitorAI Need To Restrict Content?
As the leading platform for unfiltered AI roleplay, JanitorAI constantly faces financial and legal pressures to stay within the boundaries of what is considered acceptable and legal. The lead developer, Shep, has repeatedly stated that JanitorAI is not introducing censorship or filters to AI roleplay and has no intention of doing so.

Users will continue to have access to an unfiltered roleplay experience as long as they do not engage with content that violates JanitorAI’s Terms of Service. If they are dissatisfied with this, they are free to use another platform.
