PayPal has suspended payment processing for the uncensored AI roleplay site Chub (also known as Character Hub, Chub AI).
On July 4, 2025, Chub’s official account announced that PayPal had frozen their ability to offer new subscriptions and renewals to their premium models. Alternate platforms and payment processors remained unaffected.
Chub’s Subscriptions Through PayPal Currently Frozen
Chub’s Mercury and Mars monthly subscriptions give users access to better LLM models, higher context sizes, image and audio generation, and more. Users could subscribe through the Apple App Store, PayPal, or cryptocurrency.

With PayPal freezing Chub’s account, users can now subscribe or renew only through the Apple App Store or with cryptocurrency.
PayPal is a convenient-to-use and widely adopted payment processor. The unfortunate development of them freezing Chub’s account has left many users unable to renew their subscriptions.
Why Did PayPal Freeze Chub’s Account?
PayPal requires sites and services with “Mature Audience Content” to get pre-approval before accepting payments. Since Chub offers uncensored AI roleplay, it falls under “mature audience content,” even though most of that content is AI-generated text.
Chub may not have obtained pre-approval before accepting payments via PayPal. Or PayPal may have decided that Chub’s site content is too high-risk and chose to freeze their account.
Additionally, users can use Chub’s AI image and audio generation services to generate content. With all the bad press and debate surrounding AI being used to create mature content, it’s not a surprise that PayPal decided to freeze Chub’s account.
What’s Next For Chub?
Chub remains hopeful that PayPal’s account freeze is temporary. However, even if it becomes permanent, the developers plan to switch payment processors instead of adding any censorship or filters to their site.
No, this isn’t the first time we’ve had to change processors and we aren’t like other sites.

However, after Chub’s recent decision to remove all mature content for users in the United Kingdom and Australia to comply with local laws, concerns about the platform being forced into further censorship are growing.
The Bad Press Surrounding AI-Generated Mature Content
Like with any other technology, bad actors misuse AI to create harmful and disturbing content. The growing concerns and negative press about AI-generated sexual content that’s too realistic or based on real people are entirely valid.
Sadly, hobbies like roleplaying with AI will also suffer because of bad actors misusing the technology.
Sites like Chub will have to adapt and find their way in this evolving space. Their competitor, JanitorAI, recently added censorship to pornographic images to comply with laws and potential payment processors, while still offering unfiltered AI-generated text.
